Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh joined as a Vice Chancellor of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour on 21st Jan, 2016. Born on 14th January, 1956 at Garhibishanpur, Lakhisarai district of Bihar, Ajoy Kumar Singh completed his school education under Bihar School Examination Board with First class. He obtained his graduation degree in Agriculture from Banaras Hindu University in the year 1976 with First class. He is having distinction of obtaining Master’s and Ph.D degree in Agronomy both with First class from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, the premiere agricultural institution of the country during 1978 and 1981, respectively.

The service career of Dr. Singh started in November 1981 as Junior Scientist-cum-Assistant Professor under All India Coordinated Research Project on Diara Land Improvement at Bihar Agricultural College, Sbour, Bihar. In 1986, he joined as Project Officer, Operational Research Project, Binda ‘Diara’ and carried out systematic work in Diara area to develop land situation-based cropping pattern. Package of practices for rabi maize cultivation, application of phosphatic fertilizer in Diara land, refinement of the existing bamboo boring technology and preparation of contingent crop planning studying the trend of onset of flood were some of the contributions made by Dr. Singh during this tenure.

In 1990, Dr. Singh was transferred to PG Department of Agronomy at University Headquarter, Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa as Senior Scientist-cum-Associate Professor in AICRP on cropping systems-on Farm Research. As the teaching faculty, Dr. Singh undertook both Undergraduate and Post Graduate courses besides guiding PG students. Dr. Singh also contributed significantly in introducing newer courses as well as modifying the existing courses.

Dr. Singh joined ICAR service in the year 1998 as Principal Scientist, Project Directorate for cropping Systems Research, Modipuram. In addition to normal duties, he shouldered the responsibility of Programme Facilitator, Technology Transfer and Refinement and also acted as Principal Investigator of on Farm Research having 32 centres across the country. A manual for on-farm Research on cropping system was developed by him followed by carrying out of on-farm farming systems research through OFR centres.

In 2005, Dr. Singh was appointed Zonal Coordinator, Zone-II to monitor, evaluate and guide 56 Krishi Vigyan Kendras spread across Union Territory of A&N Islands and the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

As Director of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Kolkata, Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh took the performance of the Institute and 83 KVKs to a new height in establishing the credibility of KVKs systems in the country. His contribution became quite evident in almost all walks of agricultural development including enhancement of cop and livestock productivity, extrapolation of tested technologies through effective convergence between KVK and ATMA and KVK and line department, extension and research system and many more. His successful contribution towards the growth of KVK system could also be visualized in the form of collaborative research and development activities with Internationally and Nationally reputed research institutes and organizations.

As a part of visit to abroad programme, Dr. Singh was deputed to IRRI, Philippines for 5 months in 1996 as FAO fellow to work on Computer Simulation Modeling (Ceres model) on rice-wheat cropping systems. He also took part to a joint learning and experience sharing event on ‘Strengthening agricultural research, extension and input markets in South Asia: Evidence from regional and global practice’ held at Washington D.C. on June 3-10, 2015. The event was convened by the Modernizing Extension and Advisory Services (MEAS) Consortium, the Central Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh was associated with a number of Universities/ICAR Institutes in the capacity of Member-Secretary, member of Board of Management, IRC, Nodal Officer, Co-opted member and others. The major organizations include Calcutta University, RKM Vivekananda University, Birsa Agricultural University, Narendra Deva University of Agriculture and Technology, CRIJAF, IDWG, Govt. of West Bengal; Sub-group on HRD, Training and Accreditation of Planning Commission’s Working Group on Agril. Extension for XII Plan and others. He also served as Councilor of Indian Society of Agronomy and Editor of Agronomy Digest; Secretary, FSR and Development Association and Vice-President, FSR and Development Association.

Dr. Singh also handled 6 externally funded multi-disciplinary projects as PI and Co-PI including NATP and NAIP followed by conduct of national symposium as Organizing Secretary. He also remained Course Coordinator for International and National Training Programmes.

Dr. Singh is the fellow of Indian Society of Agronomy, Indian Society of Extension Education and Indian Society of Extension. He is having 101 research papers, 73 technical bulletins and popular articles, 171 conference proceedings and 02 Instruction Manual in his credit. He has also edited and contributed 43 book chapters and manuals alongwith 01 patent.
